POP stars of the future took to the stage and showed what they were made of at the finals of the Melksham Pop Idol contest.

Amy Griggs, 16, who won the 2005 Bristol Search for a Star competition last year and won the audience vote in the Starry Eyes talent show the year before, triumphed again as she won the over-16s section.

Chassidy Brown, from Trowbridge, was the under 16s winner, with Harry Mondyk from Manchester being the judges' choice in the under 11s category. The audience also got the chance to pick their favourite at the event, held at Melksham Assembly Hall, and chose Sophie Rose from Bromham, near Devizes.

Organiser Sally Boyle said: "The heats produced a day of entertainments and then just when the judges thought they had an easier task of selecting their chosen acts from the finalists they stepped up another gear and it proved to be a nightmare to decide between them."

All the money raised at the event will go towards the Melksham Party in the Park, where winners from both Pop Idol and Starry Eyes will appear. The event will be held at King George V Playing Fields on July 15.
