Latest News & ReviewsJermaine Harvey Bursary set up in memory of heart attack victim, 26 (January 23, 2010)4:20pm Monday 11th January 2010 A bursary has been set up at a school in Bath in memory of a former Trowbridge man who died last year. The bursary, in memory of Jermaine Harvey, will be used to help students at King Edward’s School in Bath. Mr Harvey, who grew up in Trowbridge, died of a heart attack at the end of October at the age of 26, just three months after he got married. He attended King Edward’s on an assisted place and then went on to study medicine at University College, London, before changing career to become a teacher. He was working as an inclusion mentor at Hazelbury Junior School in Edmonton, north London, at the time of his death. His grandmother, Iozine Richards, 76, of Longfield Road, Trowbridge, said: “He was such a giving person, he would try and help anybody. “He gave up three quarters of the way through his medical training because he thought he would be better giving back to the community if he worked in a school. So he did that and he did it well. “I thought because he had benefited from King Edward’s School in Bath, and because of how he felt about helping children in need, I suggested the idea of a bursary to the headmaster.” Mr Harvey was born in Trowbridge and lived in the town until he was five, when he moved to London with his parents. He returned to the town when he was 11 to attend King Edward’s and lived with Mrs Richards in Longfield Road. He enjoyed playing rugby for a youth team in Bath and represented Somerset as a boy. He had been living in Plaistow with his new wife Jennifer at the time of his death. His funeral in London was attended by more than 500 people, including his parents Angela and Devon, his eight brothers and sisters and his grandmother. Mr Harvey’s uncle was Audley Richards, who represented Great Britain in the Olympic four-man bobsleigh event in Calgary in 1988 and who died from leukaemia in 2003 at the age of 42. Mrs Richards expressed her thanks for the many friends who have supported her since her grandson’s death. Anyone wishing to donate towards the bursary fund should send a cheque with ‘Jermaine Harvey bursary fund’ written on the back to King Edward’s School in Bath. |
